The Falkirk Wheel

Up early and headed West and just above a Northern approach to Glasgow went to an amazing pice of Scottish engineering, the Falkirk Wheel - a rotating boat lift.

Built in 2002, It is the only one in the world and lifts boats between two canals, the Union and Forth and Clyde canals, that link Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In just 15 minutes boats are lifted 35 m a height equivalent to 11 traditional locks.

The boats enter at both top and bottom, then the end doors are sealed and the structure rotated. Because the ends are balanced the energy used is the equivalent to that to boil 8 kettle-fulls of water.

It is raised in the rotating arm

When the boat reaches the top it goes out to the upper union canal whilst another one can enter the lower level.

Truly an amazing feat of engineering and imagination.
