Petra (on arrival)

We first saw Petra by candlelight. It's a ceremony where you sit on mats on the ground, then hear local music followed by a moving speech at the end in English.

What the guide books don't say: "Take a torch" - the 2.5km entrance to Petra is along a path that is rough in many places and passes through dark gorges or canyons. The ground is uneven with many loose stones and over cobble stone paths that are only lit by tea lights covered with a brown bag placed every 15-20 m. During the day, it's a relaxed walk; at night it's a concern...Especially with people firing camera flashes every 10 seconds or so en route; and your eyesight taking time to adjust then FLASH again. Bloody tourists!
