Jordan at last

After a 2 part flight from Bangkok first to KL, then KL to Amman we arrived about 17 hours later. Royal Jordanian airlines were very comfortable and most efficient.

The tour company picked us up from the airport at 5am after we breezed through immigration & customs then straight to the Grand Hyatt in Amman for breakfast a shower and sleep. We feel human again...

Amman

Amman is a modern clean well kept city, even the old parts would put anywhere in Egypt to shame. The traffic is well behaved streets wide and clean and the place has an affluence about it

Whilst Amman as a capital is a 20th century creation, is build on seven hills and habitation dates from Neolithic times - that's from 8500BC! The world's earliest statues and carvings from limestone and plaster were found here..

The Citadel

The highest hill in Amman has a area known as the Citadel. It has parts that date from the Bronze and Iron ages as well as the, Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic (or Umayyad) periods

The remains of the pillars of temple of Hercules dominates the skyline

Umayyad palace dates from 720AD

Roman theatre

The other amazing place is the Roman Amphitheater cut into the northern side of a hill and seen from the citadel. It was built in the second century and has been restored. It seats 6,000 people.
